🎌 Japan survival pack · for after you land
✈️ Before you fly
Carry in HAND LUGGAGE: passport, COE, admission letter, admit card, cash (¥30,000–50,000 for the first weeks), school contact number and your Nepal documents folder. Phone photos of everything too.
🛬 At the airport
Immigration gives you your Residence Card (在留カード zairyū card) right at the counter — check the name spelling before leaving the desk. Your school usually picks you up; their number is in your pre-departure sheet.
📱 First week — 3 jobs
1) City office (区役所/市役所): register your address within 14 days. 2) SIM: student-friendly = Rakuten Mobile / LINEMO / ahamo — bring residence card. 3) Bank account: Japan Post Bank (ゆうちょ) is easiest for new students — your school helps.
🏪 Eating cheap
Konbini (7-Eleven, Lawson, FamilyMart) onigiri ¥120–150; supermarket bento gets 30–50% stickers after 7–8pm; 100-yen shops (Daiso) for everything home. Cook rice — it's your money's best friend.
🚃 Unwritten rules
No phone calls on trains. Queue lines painted on platforms are real. Garbage is sorted by type and day — your building has a chart, follow it or neighbours complain. Being 5 minutes early = on time.

✈️ Before you fly
Carry in HAND LUGGAGE: passport, visa, admission letter, tuition receipt, cash (₩300,000–500,000 for the first weeks), school contact and your Nepal documents folder. Install KakaoTalk, Naver Map and Papago before boarding — Korea runs on these three apps, and Google Maps barely works there.
🛬 First 90 days — ARC
Your Alien Registration Card (외국인등록증) is your Korean ID — apply within 90 days of arrival (book at hikorea.go.kr; your school helps). Without ARC you can't open a bank account, get a proper SIM plan or sign anything. Do it in week one, not week eleven.
📱 SIM & money
Airport counters sell tourist SIMs; switch to a cheap MVNO plan once your ARC arrives. Bank account: bring passport + ARC + certificate of enrollment — KEB Hana, Woori and KB are used to student accounts. Get a T-money card at any convenience store: one tap for bus, subway and taxis.
🍜 Eating cheap
Convenience stores (CU, GS25, 7-Eleven) do full meals ₩3,000–5,000; kimbap shops (김밥천국) are the student canteen — kimbap ₩3,000, ramyeon ₩4,000. School cafeterias are the best value of all. Side dishes and water are free at restaurants, and tipping doesn't exist.
🚇 Unwritten rules
Give and receive with two hands. Priority subway seats stay empty even in rush hour — don't sit there. Shoes off indoors, always. Quiet voices on trains. Recycling is sorted strictly by type — your building has a schedule, follow it.
💼 Part-time work
D-4 students: allowed only AFTER 6 months of study and only WITH the immigration permission stamp — up to 20 hrs/week. Attendance under ~80% or unpermitted work can cancel your visa. Never risk it; ask your counsellor first.

2 · Learn Japanese 📚
Start the free N5 course on the Home tab. Language schools expect N5 level — the JLCT exam is how you prove it.
3 · JLCT exam 🎫
Book your seat from Home. We ask your date of birth and gender because the official JLCT registration needs them. We register you, your admit card arrives right here in the app, and this page shows a countdown to exam day.
4 · Documents 📄
Upload citizenship, transcripts, photo and passport inside your journey plan. Your counsellor checks each one: ⏳ means being checked, ✅ means accepted, ❌ means re-upload — with the exact reason. Clean documents now = no visa surprises later.
5 · Pass the exam = the gate opens 🔑
After exam day, submit your result in your plan. The moment your counsellor verifies a PASS, the rest of your journey unlocks: school application → COE → visa.
6 · School & COE 🏫
We apply to your Japanese language school. Japan then issues your COE (Certificate of Eligibility) — it takes 2–3 months and that is completely normal. We track it for you.
7 · NOC & visa 🛂
NOC is Nepal's own permission letter (checklist below — fully online, NPR 2,000, 3–5 days). With COE + NOC ready, we lodge your student-visa file at the Japanese embassy / VFS.
8 · Fly 🛫
Ticket, pre-departure orientation and arrival support — we stay with you to the airport, and your school receives you in Japan.

1 · Counselling 💬
We check your academics, budget and goal, then pick your route: language institute (어학당, start as a beginner) or degree course (needs TOPIK or an English track). It's free — tap ➕ below or request a call from Home.
2 · Learn Korean 📚
Start the free Korean course on the Home tab — Hangul first, then 20 lessons to TOPIK I level. Language institutes accept beginners, but arriving with Hangul + basics puts you a class ahead (and interviews go better).
3 · TOPIK — when you need it 🎫
TOPIK I (levels 1–2) helps language-visa files; TOPIK II (levels 3–6) is what degree courses want — or IELTS for English-taught tracks. TOPIK runs a few times a year in Nepal through the Korean Embassy and seats fill fast — we track dates and tell you when to register.
4 · Documents 📄
Upload citizenship, transcripts, photo and passport inside your journey plan. Korean schools also ask for a bank balance certificate (roughly US$10,000+ shown for language courses — exact figure depends on school and city; we confirm yours). Counsellor checks every file: ⏳ checking, ✅ accepted, ❌ re-upload with the reason.
5 · School admission 🏫
We apply to your Korean language institute or university. The school interviews you (simple Korean/English video call — we prep you), then issues the Certificate of Admission.
6 · NOC & visa 🛂
NOC is Nepal's permission letter (checklist below — online, NPR 2,000, 3–5 days). Then we lodge your D-4-1 (language) or D-2 (degree) student-visa file at the Korean Embassy in Kathmandu.
7 · Tuition & ticket 💳
After visa approval you pay the school invoice, we book your ticket and run pre-departure orientation — including the Korea survival pack on the Home tab.
8 · Fly 🛫
We stay with you to the airport, your school receives you in Korea, and your first job there is the ARC within 90 days — the survival pack walks you through it.
